New Asian/Transpacific Submarine Cables

In addition to AAG, several new cable systems in/via Asia are developed (just commissioned or currently under construction). This includes :
  • Trans-Pacific Express (US-China)
  • FLAG NGN (Intra-Asia, Intra-Africa, Mediterranean, Trans-Pacific)
  • IMEWE/TIC (Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Europe)
  • East Asia Crossing (EAC) Extension
From a certain point of view EAC transpacific might offer a better network robustness than AAG since it uses two separate routes to connect to the US (something similar to the Apollo cable system for Transatlantic connection). Some other information about the EAC extension:
  • Transpacific ring system connecting South East Asia (the Phillipines) directly to the US
  • Configuration: Design capacity 2.56Tbps; initial capacity 200Gbps; 4 FPs, DWDM
  • RFS: July 2008 ?

Tyco Telecommunications and NEC Begin Construction of Unity Cable SystemJune 24, 2008

Tyco Telecommunications (US) Inc. and NEC Corporation today announced the commencement of construction on the Unity Cable System, a high-bandwidth, trans-Pacific, optical submarine cable system that will link Los Angeles, U.S. to Chikura, Japan. The contract for the project was signed on February 23, 2008, between the Unity Consortium, comprising of six purchasers, Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, Google, KDDI, Pacnet and SingTel and suppliers Tyco Telecommunications and NEC Corporation.

“Tyco Telecommunications is proud to be a system supplier for the Unity Cable System, a state-of-the-art long haul system that will provide additional connectivity and capacity between regions of the world that increasingly require more bandwidth," said Bill Marra, General Manager of Tyco Telecommunications.

The Unity Cable System is a multi-fiber pair system, with each fiber pair capable of carrying up to 960 Gigabits of data per second. Tyco Telecommunications and NEC will each manufacture a portion of the undersea system. Tyco Telecommunications will install the undersea cable from the U.S. end and NEC will install the undersea cable from the Japan end. The cables will be interfaced on the seabed of the Pacific Ocean.

"NEC is extremely excited to take part in this significant cable build, which will provide high speed connectivity between the U.S. and Japan. We truly believe this cable will become the backbone of the Pacific information highway," commented Osamu Harada, General Manager of NEC's Submarine Network Division.

The Unity Cable System will meet the demand for connectivity between the U.S. and Japan that has been increasing since the activation of the last trans-Pacific system in 2002. Additionally, the Unity Cable System will connect to various intra-Asian cable systems, to facilitate seamless connectivity to other major cities in Asia.

Pipe Networks unveils Sydney-Guam undersea cable plan

Published: Monday 14 January 2008 | 09:13 AM CET, Telecompaper

Australian telecommunications company Pipe Networks will begin a AUD 200 million project constructing an undersea cable system linking Sydney to Guam. Foundation customers include VSNL, Telikom PNG, Iinet, Internode and Primus Telecom. Pipe Networks did not disclose other domestic and international customer contracts citing confidentiality restrictions. The system is expected to be completed mid to late 2009.

The 6,900 km cable is referred to as PPC-1 (or Project Runway) and the main trunk of the system will be a 2-pair fibre cable capable of delivering 1.92 Tbps. The system will include branching units outside Sydney and the Gold Coast to allow the connection of future projects, along with a spur into Madang, Papua New Guinea. The company expects that the project will achieve positive cash recovery of the investment within three to five years. Furthermore, Pipe expects that the cable ownership vehicle is expected to be debt free within six months following commissioning of PPC-1 (scheduled for the second quarter of 2009).

The project will be structured through a number of new wholly-owned subsidiaries. These include Pipe International (Australia), which holds Australian based assets; PPC 1 (US), a Delaware corporation holding Guam landing station assets; and PPC 1, a Bermuda corporation owning international assets. The company has reconfirmed previous guidance for 2008 and 2009 of revenues for the full year to 30 June 2008 to total AUD 33 million to AUD 35 million with a net profit of AUD 7 million to AUD 7.4 million. The company's board expects revenues in the 2008/09 financial year to be between AUD 44 million and AUD 46 million and net profit to eclipse AUD 10 million. While Project Runway is expected to have material impacts on profits beyond the 2009 financial year, there is no current expectation of material impact on previously issued forecasts, Pipe Networks said.

PARIS, April 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --

Telstra and Alcatel-Lucent
(Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today demonstrated a new 9,000 kilometre
submarine cable that will dramatically increase Internet capacity between
Australia and the United States.
The new cable, which will be landed at Tamarama Beach this week, can be
scaled up to 1.28 Terabits per second capacity between the two countries. At
full capacity of 1.28 Terabits per second the cable is capable of carrying
160,000 concurrent high definition television channels.
"The explosion of user-generated online content means we need more
capacity than ever before with the United States, which is already the
destination for two-thirds of all Australian traffic on the internet," Ms
Kate McKenzie, Group Managing Director, Telstra Wholesale, said today.
"This cable is the largest ever built and owned by an Australian company.
It's another example of Telstra investing to ensure Australia can enjoy the
health care, education and productivity benefits made possible by high-speed
broadband technology," Ms McKenzie said.
Alcatel-Lucent began laying the cable between Sydney and Hawaii earlier
this year. Work will continue to lay the cable across the Pacific Ocean to
Hawaii, and the cable will be operational by end-2008. From Hawaii the cable
will interconnect with the new Asia America Gateway cable and other existing
cables providing direct access to the mainland United States.
Hilary Mine, Alcatel-Lucent's Managing Director Australasia and North
Asia, said this new project strengthens its enduring relationship with
Telstra.
"As Telstra's wireline partner, Alcatel Lucent is delighted to celebrate
this latest milestone in dramatically enhancing Australia's communications
capacity," Ms Mine said.
The increased capacity means Telstra's retail and wholesale customers
will enjoy:
- higher Internet speeds and greater security when they access
information from the United States on Telstra's Next G(TM) network and
through BigPond, and when they use services such as telecommuting and
videoconferencing
- an expanded range and quality of services for business customers
including advanced multimedia and e-commerce applications, and more
intelligent network services.
Ms McKenzie said that Telstra first invested in Next G(TM) wireless
broadband and ADSL2+ fixed broadband, and now we are investing in undersea
cables to give our customers the best experience possible.
"All of these investments are occurring where there are benefits for
customers, and where Telstra can make a commercial return on its investment,"
Ms McKenzie said.

True pak. It's currently peak seasons for this industry :-) Hopefully it brings benefits for all of us ... By the way, I am wondering, if there is any indonesian telco has an initiative to involve in Sydney-Guam cable :-D It's definitely good for diversity particularly if it does not land in Jakarta

PT Telkom and PT Indosat already joined to AAG Cable consortium that will pass Guam to USA, so they extend AAG to Sydney-Hawaii by Telstra. Telstra is member of AAG Cable consortium. Telstra also connected to AJC (Australia Japan Cable) that connected to Guam.

An Indonesia Telco/NAP provider can meet with PPC-1 (Pipe Pacific Cable 1 Sydney Guam) by buy some capacity to VSNL International/Tata at Singapore. VSNL is member of PPC-1.
